India launches 1st lunar spacecraft Chandrayaan-1
India's first lunar spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 lifted off from Sriharikot in southern Andhra Pradesh, at 6:20 a.m. (0050 GMT) on Wednesday, according to NDTV.
Chandrayaan-1, with 11 scientific instruments (payloads) – six foreign and five Indian -- is the first spacecraft mission of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) beyond Earth orbit.
Chandrayaan-1 was adjusted into its expected path 20 minutes after it was blasted off. Local NDTV said that "it works well on its orbit now."
Scientists in the control room in Bangalore celebrated the successful launch of India's maiden moon mission with warm applause.
The director of this mission, Madhavan Nair, made a short speech and claimed this "a historic moment."
The scientific and mission objectives are to probe the origin and evolution of the moon, understand the mineralogy and presence of Helium-3, a relatively clean fuel for future generation nuclear reactors.
If the moon mission is successful, India will join an elite club of a small number of countries which have sent crafts into orbit around the moon.
The Indian Academy of Sciences started planning a lunar mission in 1999 and roped in the Astronautical Society of India in 2000.
The ambitious project started with the setting up of a national lunar mission task force by the state-run ISRO. The country's top scientists and technologists assessed the feasibility of such a mission, its objectives and configuration required.
"The task force recommended that an Indian mission to the moon was worthwhile in view of our domain expertise in space technology. About 1,000 scientists held brainstorming sessions on the scientific objectives of the mission, instruments to be developed, launch vehicle and spacecraft building," ISRO director S. Satish said.
"The moon has again become the prime target for exploration and there is rejuvenated interest. All the major space-faring nations started planning missions to explore the moon and to utilize moon as a potential base for space exploration," the director added.
The mission would be followed by Chandrayaan-2 which features a lander and a rover. India and Russia would jointly participate in this project. However, there might be a provision to accommodate payloads from other space agencies like in Chandrayaan-1.
"This apart, studies are being conducted by ISRO on sending unmanned spacecraft to planet Mars as well as to asteroids and comets. Through such programs, ISRO intends to undertake the exploration of space besides its primary mission of developing and utilizing space technology for the overall development of the country", the ISRO official said.
The PSLV-C11 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle), Chandrayaan-1 sits on the second launch pad of Satish Dhawan space centre at Sriharikota, about 100 km (62 miles) north of the southern Indian city of Chennai, October 11, 2008. Chandrayaan-1 is India's first mission to moon

Daniel Craig Covers Parade Magazine
James Bond star Daniel Craig takes the latest cover of Parade magazine, out Friday. Here’s what the Quantum of Solace actor had to say:
On who would be the better James Bond —- Barack Obama or John McCain: “Obama would be the better Bond because — if he’s true to his word — he’d be willing to quite literally look the enemy in the eye and go toe-to-toe with them. McCain, because of his long service and experience, would probably be a better M (Bond’s boss, played by Dame Judi Dench). There is, come to think of it, a kind of Judi Dench quality to McCain.”
On how playing the world’s most famous spy has changed his life: “I was at a stage of my career in which things were going pretty well. I was making plenty of money, relatively speaking—enough to live on. But when this opportunity came along, I knew it would turn everything upside-down. I’m 40 now. It really helped me put things in perspective. It wasn’t about the money. It was about changing things up and seeing what would happen. At some point, life starts to pass you by and becomes about avoidance. I want to stay clear from that situation, because I don’t like that.”
On becoming a sex symbol: “If people want to think of me that way, that’s great. But the truth is, I don’t have a connection with that image.”
On donning a Speedo for the Bond films: “I was being objectified, but actually that’s not a bad thing to feel. (laughs) I knew exactly what was going on when I did that shot. There’s a conscious decision to everything I do. For me to say, ‘Oh, God! I didn’t realize that would happen!’ sounds incredibly naïve. I look at that picture, and my only thought now is that I certainly don’t look like that anymore. For Quantum of Solace, I made a decision that I wanted to get bigger and get muscles, because Bond is older and has probably been training.”
On moving past the sex symbol status: “As I keep saying, I’m 40 now, and in five years’ time or even less, sex symbol might be a really kind of weird term to attach to myself. How about sexy father figure?”
On connecting with his many tough-guy antecedents in Hollywood: “The obvious choice for me would be Bogart. Not only because of that ease he had with his unique take on masculinity, but also—and this is much more important—because he got to sleep with Lauren Bacall.”

Quantum of Solace is due out November 14.
