Rare "star-making machine" found in distant universe

Labels:

A galaxy 12.3 billion light years away from the Milky Way, nicknamed "Baby Boom", is seen in this undated handout image released to Reuters July 10, 2008. Telescopes looking back in time to more than 12 billion years ago have spotted a star factory -- a galaxy producing so many new stars that they have nicknamed it the "baby boom" galaxy.

A team of astronomers have uncovered an extreme stellar machine -- a galaxy in the very remote universe pumping out stars at a surprising rate of about 1,000 to 4,000 per year, NASA reported on Thursday.

At that rate, the galaxy needs only 50 million years, not very long on cosmic timescales, to grow into a galaxy equivalent to the most massive ones we see today.

"In comparison, our own Milky Way galaxy turns out an average of just 10 stars per year," said NASA in a press release.

While galaxies in our nearby universe can produce stars at similarly high rates, the farthest one known before now was about 11.7 billion light-years away. However, the exact distance to this galaxy is a whopping 12.3 billion light-years.

This new discovery, made possible by several telescopes including NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, goes against the most common theory of galaxy formation. According to the theory, called the Hierarchical Model, galaxies slowly bulk up their stars over time by absorbing tiny pieces of galaxies -- and not in one big burst as observed in the newfound "Baby Boom" galaxy.

"This galaxy is undergoing a major baby boom, producing most of its stars all at once," said Peter Capak of NASA's Spitzer Science Center, who is lead author of a new report detailing the discovery in the July 10th issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Baby Boom galaxy, which belongs to a class of galaxies called starbursts, is the new record holder for the brightest starburst galaxy in the very distant universe, with brightness being a measure of its extreme star-formation rate.

This is because it has a huge number of youthful stars. When stars are born, they shine with a lot of ultraviolet light and produce a lot of dust. The dust absorbs the ultraviolet light but, like a car sitting in the sun, it warms up and re-emits light at infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, making the galaxy unusually bright to the observing telescopes.

Arch collapses from Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina

Combination of two photos shows Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier before (L, taken July 4, 2008) and after (R, taken July 9, 2008) the collapse of the roof of an ice tunnel, near the city of El Calafate in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, southern Argentina

Dozens of people witnessed Wednesday the collapsing of the arch or bridge of ice from the Perito Moreno glacier, located in El Calafate, in Santa Cruz province in the Argentine Patagonia.

Only around 40 people had the chance to see the phenomenon, despite the fact that experts had forecast the fracture of the arch.

The cracking of the natural bridge or arch began at 11:20 local time (1420 GMT) when only a few people were inside the national park of Los Glaciares.

However, millions more have been able to see on the Internet (www.epatagonia.gov.ar/glaciar) the moment when the huge ice wall more than 50 meters long collapsed, making a tremendous noise amid shouts and applause from the people present.

This is the first time the breaking of the Perito Moreno glacier has happened in wintertime, which has generated concern for what specialists call "the consequences of the global warming."

The Perito Moreno glacier, with an extension of 250 square kilometers, is considered one of the most important drinking water reserves in the world.

It is five kilometers wide at its face and 30 km in length, with an average height of 60 meters above the surface of the water of Lake Argentine, into which huge chunks of ice fall. The last rupture was in the summer of 2006.

The glacier takes its name from Francisco Pascacio Moreno, an expert (perito) and exceptional Argentine researcher who dedicated his life to studying Patagonia.

This ice arch or bridge falls every four to five years during the Southern Hemisphere's summer (from September to May), but on this occasion it ruptured in winter.

New study finds water in moon rocks

Labels:

Green glass spherules collected from the Apollo 15 landing site at Hadley Rille on the moon are shown in this undated handout photo
U.S. researchers have found water in rocks from the moon -- prompting new questions about its origin, said a study published in Thursday's British weekly journal Nature.

The discovery was made by analysing small glass beads from lunar sand scooped up by Apollo mission astronauts nearly 40 years ago. They used a new method of analyzing elements in the lunar sand samples to show strong evidence of water, dating back 3 billion years.

The standard "giant impact" theory for the formation of the moon assumes that a huge body crashed into the early Earth, sending massive amounts of molten magma into orbit. This disc of magma gradually coalesced and cooled into the moon as it is today.

But since the moon is too small to maintain an atmosphere, any volatile gases or liquids, such as water, were thought to have bubbled away and escaped into space.

Now a team at Brown University, Rhode Island, has thrown this theory into doubt by finding water in the titanium glass beads that are scattered all over the lunar surface. These are the result of huge lunar volcanic eruptions that occurred billions of years ago.

Importantly, the beads are made from material that originates from deep within the moon -- avoiding any chance that the water could have come from external sources such as comets hitting the surface.

Using high precision secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), the team was surprised to discover that the beads contain around 45 parts per million of water.

By modelling the dynamics of the volcanic eruption and rate of cooling, researchers calculated that approximately 95 percent of any water would have been lost during volcanic activity that brought the beads to the surface.

This leads to an estimate that lava deep within the moon contains water at up to 745 parts per million -- similar to that in Earth's upper mantle.

"Our model is not perfect - so although we know there is water there, we cannot be sure exactly how much," said Alberto Saal, lead author on the research. Even so, Saal added, the presence of water should definitely be considered in future models of the moon's formation.

"This is a surprising and important result," said David Stevenson, an expert on the evolution of planets at the California Institute of Technology. "Water lowers the melting point of rocks, so it could change the evolution of a body such as the moon."

"But one important thing to note is that the moon is probably heterogeneous," Stevenson added. "It is possible that during a giant impact some areas of water could have become trapped. The discovery of water in one place doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the moon is the same."

Jose Canseco: Madonna Wanted To Have My Babies

Madonna is being hit with another curve ball.

Last week, Us Weekly insinuated that Madonna, 49, had been cheating on husband Guy Ritchie with New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. The mag’s latest issue delves into Madge pursing other athletes, namely former Oakland A and onetime Yankee Jose Canseco in 1991.

Canseco was married at the time and first talked about the incident in his 2008 biography Vindicated. Here are some samples from US Weekly’s latest interview with Canseco, now 44.

What can you tell us about your relationship with Madonna? She was interested but you were not, correct? Well it’s in the book. We were not intimate. I was married at the time. I was interested in my wife.

Where did she approach you? Where was the first time you met? How did it happen? At her house I think it was in the Hollywood Hills. Our people set it up. Her people approached me saying she was interested in meeting me. She had a Cuban child and wanted another one. She wanted to get married and have a child with me.

That was her intention to have a child with you? Yeah, I’m Cuban and she wanted a Cuban child.

So she was interested in your genes. Yeah, I’m Cuban 6-foot-3, athletic, built.
