Longest known flying fish flight recorded on video

Labels:

A Japanese TV crew has filmed what is believed to be the longest flight of a flying fish ever recorded.

The NHK television network said one of its camera crews captured the 45-second flight on video on Monday, from a ferry near Kuchino-erabu island in southwestern Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture. The crew was reportedly on its way to shoot footage for a nature documentary.

The fish can be seen occasionally beating its tail against the surface of the water to keep itself aloft. The ferry was traveling at a speed of about 20 mph (30 kilometers per hour) during the encounter, NHK said.

More than 50 species of flying fish, in the marine family known as Exocoetidae, are found in warmer ocean waters worldwide. They can rise out of the water to avoid predators underneath, and stretch out its long pectoral fins to glide through the air.

Usually the fish remain airborne for just a few seconds before landing back in the water — but as Monday's video demonstrated, they can give themselves another boost with their tail fins. The previous record for a fish's compound flight was 42 seconds, reported from Florida by a sea captain with a stopwatch in 1928.

Other experts have cited flights lasting 28 seconds.

A 45-second flight may well be close to the physical limit for a flying fish, since the creature must suspend brachial respiration in the air, NHK reported.

Jude Law is a Meter Man

Labels:

Jude Law chats on his cell phone and pays the parking meter while strolling through the streets of London on Thursday.

The 35-year-old British actor is reportedly dating rocker Rod Stewart’s daughter Kimberly, 28, after two were recently seen kissing in the VIP area of the 195 Nightclub in Essex.

An onlooker said: “We couldn’t believe it when we saw Kimberly Stewart kissing Jude Law. He’s the first big name we have ever seen in there. So my friends and myself walked over and asked if we could have our photo taken with them. But they said no, turned back to face each other again then carried on kissing.”

The source added: “Two bodyguards then came over to us and snatched the camera out of my friend’s hand because they had seen us taking pictures. They passed the camera to Jude, who then looked through our photos. The bodyguard later gave the camera back to us and, to our disappointment, they had deleted our pictures of Jude and Kimberly.”

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Premieres Tonight!

Tune into the two-hour season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance TONIGHT, May 22 @ 8PM ET/PT on FOX as the best and the worst showcase their spins, lifts and stunts. The gorgeous Cat Deeley will be returning as host!

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe was recently asked by EW what his criteria for putting together the top 20 dancers. He said, “I don’t always pick the best dancers. It is casting. It is saying, ‘Okay, this personality is going to jar against this personality.’ I want to keep it as interesting as possible. I’d like to diversify styles as much as possible. I want to have people that we can push and not have them break down the minute they can’t do something. It’s a long season for dancers. It isn’t like American Idol. If you lose your voice, you lose your voice one week. If you twist an ankle or put your knee out, that’s it, the season’s over for you. So they’ve got to be sturdy, both physically and mentally.”

And while we’re still on the topic of dance, America’s Best Dance Crew will return on Thursday, June 19 @ 10PM ET/PT on MTV. Host Mario Lopez and judges JC Chasez (N*Sync), rapper Lil Mama and choreographer Shane Sparks (You Got Served) will all return to MTV to critique each dance crew.

Viewers will get a front row seat as the top 10 dance crews are selected during MTV’s Live Casting Special on Saturday, June 7 @ 2PM ET/PT. Fans can catch up with the first season winners, JabbaWockeeZ, immediately afterwards in Walk It Out with the JabbaWockeeZ and Shane Sparks.

“This 21-day cleanse gives me a chance to think about [eating] differently and see what my attachments are to certain kinds of foods – and what I’m willing to do to change,” she wrote on Sunday (day one). “Don’t know if I’m going to feel better or worse, but I’m willing to try to see if my body at least feels differently.”

“Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying.” she added on day two. “I had been focused on what I had to give up — sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. ‘What’s left?’ I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast — strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes.”

UK girl, 18, has had three hearts

An 18-year-old British girl has had no fewer than three hearts -- the one she was born with and the other two transplanted hearts, media reported Monday.

Leanne Nicholson, a medical miracle, and lucky to be alive, is recovering at her home in Choppington, in Northumberland, from her second heart transplant three months ago.

Until the age of 12, Leanne was a normal and healthy child. But in April 2002 a virus -- unnamed and unknown -- swept through her body, attacking the muscle tissue of her heart.

She was diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy, literally "heart muscle disease."

Her heart was so damaged by the virus that the doctors said it was as though she'd suffered three major heart attacks.

The first transplanted heart came from a young woman who had died of a head injury. And the transplant was, to everyone's huge relief, a success in 2002.

But after just 14 months, Leanne went into chronic rejection. Her body began to recognize the heart as an alien tissue and started to attack it so powerfully that even the strongest immuno-suppressive drugs did not work.

Surgeons attempted to fit Leanne with a pacemaker to regulate her heartbeat and help it keep a regular rhythm. But the operation was not a success because the heart was so weak, so in 2003 Leanne was once again rushed to intensive care with heart failure.

"To receive a second heart transplant is a million-to-one chance as there is such a shortage of donor organs," says Leanne.

In January this year, shortly after she spent her 18th birthday, Leanne again went into complete heart failure.

Her parents were told that a transplant was the only option. Without it she had at best just 30 days to live.

Doctors told them to say goodbye to Leanne, who by then was on life support, unconscious and with pipes, drains and wires all over her.

She was lucky enough that after three days of fighting for life, a heart was found, from a 35-year-old man from London who had died in a car accident.

Leanne is now making a steady recovery and said she had not felt so well in years.

The average survival rate for heart transplant patients is ten years, with many living for 20 years or more, and so her future is looking brighter than it has for a very long time.

Thousands evacuate after Chile volcano Chaiten erupts

Labels:

Chile's long-dormant Chaiten volcano spewed clouds of gray smoke, hot rocks and toxic gas on Tuesday, forcing authorities to order the complete evacuation of two nearby towns, media reports said.

More than 4,000 people left the town of Chaiten, 10 kilometers (six miles) from the volcano, after the initial eruption. Several hundred are still waiting to leave. Futaleufu, 70 kilometers (44 miles) to the east, is also being evacuated.

The volcano's column of smoke and ash stretched more than 19 kilometers (12 miles) into the sky on Monday, Chile's National Geology and Mineral Service reported, and it extended well into neighboring Argentina and to the Atlantic Ocean.

Chilean officials said molten rock was being thrown from the volcano but that no lava flows had been detected.

The five-day-old eruption is the first in at least 9,000 years for the volcano in southern Chile, according to volcanologists at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

A government vulcanologist warned there could be a big eruption at any time.

"There could be a major explosion that could collapse the volcano's cone," said Luis Lara of the National Geologic and Mining Service.
