Milestones in Photography
Centuries of advances in chemistry and optics, including the invention of the camera obscura, set the stage for the world’s first photograph. In 1826, French scientist Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, took that photograph, titled View from the Window at Le Gras at his family’s country home. Niépce produced his photo—a view of a courtyard and outbuildings seen from the house’s upstairs window—by exposing a bitumen-coated plate in a camera obscura for several hours on his windowsill.
Best known for his development of electromagnetic theory, Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell dabbled in color theory throughout his life, eventually producing the first color photograph in 1861. Maxwell created the image of the tartan ribbon shown here by photographing it three times through red, blue, and yellow filters, then recombining the images into one color composite.
The settling of a debate—whether, during its trot, all four of a horse’s hooves are off the ground at the same time—led English photographer Eadweard Muybridge to develop the first photographs to capture the sequence of movement. In 1878, Muybridge arranged 24 trip-wire cameras along a racetrack. The resulting photos, The Horse in Motion, proved all four hooves leave the ground during a trot and set the stage for the first motion pictures.
An unknown photographer inspired legions of tornado-chasers when he captured the earliest known photograph of a tornado. The black-and-white image was taken on August 28, 1884, about 22 miles (45 kilometers) southwest of Howard, South Dakota.
Underwater color photography was born with this shot of a hogfish, photographed off the Florida Keys in the Gulf of Mexico by Dr. William Longley and National Geographic staff photographer Charles Martin in 1926. Equipped with cameras encased in waterproof housing and pounds of highly explosive magnesium flash powder for underwater illumination, the pair pioneered underwater photography.

Elle Fanning @ 2008 Sundance Film Festival
FAWNING OVER FANNING
Elle Fanning, Dakota’s little sister, attends the Cotton Market world premiere party for Phoebe In Wonderland held during the 2008 Sundance Film Festival on Sunday in Park City, Utah.
In the film, Elle, 9, plays a little girl named Phoebe, who struggles with her increasingly mysterious and obsessive behavior and her Alice in Wonderland-infused fantasy life. Phoebe seeks enlightenment from her unconventional drama teacher (Patricia Clarkson). Felicity Huffman plays Phoebe’s mother and Bill Pullman also co-stars.
Pictures of Elle and costar Felicity shooting scenes turned up back in May.
Also check out this interview with the film’s director Daniel Barnz at IonCinema.com.
Barnz spoke very highly of Elle: “We went to Elle Fanning, who had made an impression on me in both Door in the Floor and Babel. When I met her I was immediately struck – as I think many people are – by this kind of luminous quality she has about her. In fact, later on, when we were in the height of our pre-production stress and wondering how we were ever going to pull this off – we did our hair and makeup tests. Elle’s face appeared on the screen – there were probably ten people sitting in the room – and there were audible gasps. It sounds like a cliché but it was true – she literally lit up the screen. It really reassured all of us, knowing that we had that kind of presence in the role.”

James Rousseau: Kate is My Inspiration
Model and aspiring musician James Rousseau was interviewed by BBC’s breakfast presenter Howard Bentham Monday morning. This is the first interview James has ever given in three years and the first time he’s ever publicly spoken about his relationship with actress girlfriend Kate Bosworth. Interview snippets:
On why he wants to get into music now: “Music has always been a big part of my life. My mum plays the guitar and so she used to strum chord progressions and I’d sing with her and make up a melody as I went along, so I loved to harmonise and improvise from a young age. On the stereo there was always Dylan, Neil Young and Johnny Cash playing and I think a lot of my song writing is inspired by those people.”
On whether Kate was the inspiration for the song “To Make You Mine”: “I wrote this as a gift for her. Kate’s always been a great inspiration for me in my life. I’d put music on the back burner for a while and when we started seeing each other I’d play her songs and she used to say you should definitely go back into the studio and start recording so I owe a lot to her for really pushing me to get back in there.”
The interview is posted at BBC. You have to use the fast forward buttons to skip forward 2 hours and 10 minutes (that is 8 presses of the 15 minutes button and two presses of the 5 minutes). The interview will start up a minute or two later.
And if you haven’t already, check out Rousseau’s premiere song here.
