Sir Edmund Hillary: First Ascent of Mount Everest

Climbing PartnersHillary and Norgay were part of a Royal Geographic Society (RGS) expedition. Though many mountaineers had preceded them in the attempt, none had succeeded in reaching the top and many had died in the process.

Siege of the SummitThe RGS assembled a massive team, consisting of a dozen climbers, 35 Sherpa guides, 350 porters and 18 tons of food and equipment.

Base CampThe teams established ever-higher footholds on the mountain, in order to acclimate themselves to the altitude and put a two-man team within reach of the summit.

Sherpa GuidesThe effort would have been impossible without the help of the Nepalese people who live in the shadow of the mountain. In this photo, two of the Sherpas get ready to break camp.
