Chrysler shuts plants

Dec 18 - Facing a credit crisis and dwindling sales, Chrysler announced it would shut down all manufacturing operations from Dec. 19 for at least a month.

The announcement from Chrysler, considered the weakest of the U.S. automakers, came in a letter to employees, suppliers and the United Auto Workers union, as Detroit's Big Three look to shore up cash ahead of a possible White House bailout.

Gaza truce over

Dec. 18 - Israelis and Palestinians are bracing themselves for fresh violence as Hamas declared an end to a six month-old ceasefire with Israel in Gaza.

The Islamist group which runs the Palestinian coastal enclave said it wasn't prepared to renew the Egyptian-brokered truce, which is due to expire on Friday, because of Israel's refusal to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip. The move raises the prospect of an escalation in cross-border fighting. Helen Long reports.

New clashes in Greece

Dec. 18 - Protesters hurled firebombs and stones at police outside the Greek parliament in continuing unrest over the police killing of a teenage boy earlier this month.

Public outrage over the shooting has crystallised into anger and resentment over economic hardships and cronyism.Helen Long reports.

Britney Spears has topped ET's annual Hot List.

The 27-year-old singer - who has achieved incredible success with comeback album "Circus" - took the coveted number one spot in the list, made up of the stars who have received the most coverage and mentions on U.S. TV show "Entertainment Tonight" in the past year.

An ET writer explained: "From a historical election to surprising splits, sizzling romances and major comebacks, 2008 was a remarkable year for celebrity news." Britney - who has got her life back on track following her public breakdown, in which she shaved her head and lost custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline - was followed on the list by US TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

Rounding off the top five were Brad Pitt, U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama and Brad's partner Angelina Jolie. Other celebrities included in the top 20 were George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Jennifer Aniston, Will Smith and Miley Cyrus.

Charlie Wilson’s War star Daniel Eric Gold has snagged a recurring role in Ugly Betty, reports EW.

The up-and-coming actor will play Matt, a friend Betty (America Ferrera) meets at YETI (Young Editors’ Training Initiative).

Betty and Matt have a future together, one that involves a big secret Matt has.

Looks like it’s the end of the storyline for Betty’s current love interest, Jesse (Val Emmich)!

Birthday girl Katie Holmes takes daughter Suri to visit a school on the Upper East Side in New York City on Thursday.

Suri wore her favorite Scallop Placket Coat from Best & Co. while carrying around a bag full of goodies from trendy Bouchon Bakery (Columbus Circle’s Time Warner Center).

Other pictures include Katie and Suri last night after Katie’s performance of All My Sons.
