European scientists on Monday said they had discovered a batch of five "super-Earths," each of them between four and 30 times bigger than our planet, in a trio of distant solar systems.

Their findings, presented at a conference in France, suggests that at least one third of stars similar to our own Sun host these difficult-to-detect celestial bodies, multiplying previous estimates by five.

It also brings astronomers closer to finding planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets, that could potentially duplicate the conditions that gave rise to life on Earth.

"In a year or two, it is likely that we will find habitable planets circling small stars" such as the sun, said Setphane Udry, a researcher at Switzerland's Geneva Observatory and a member of the team that made the discovery.

The trio of planets orbit a star slightly less massive than our sun, 42 light-years away towards the southern Doradus and Pictor constellations. A light-year is the distance light can travel in one year.

The planets are bigger than Earth -- one is 4.2 times the mass, one is 6.7 times and the third is 9.4 times.

They orbit their star at extremely rapid speeds -- one whizzing around in just four days, compared with Earth's 365 days, one taking 10 days and the slowest taking 20 days.

Udry and colleagues used the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher or HARPS, a telescope at La Silla observatory in Chile, to find the planets.

HARPS, sometimes called the "planet hunter", has uncovered 45 super-Earths since it began operation in 2004.

Emma Watson is to be the new face of Chanel perfume. The "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" star has won a two-year contract worth million to promote Coco Mademoiselle.

The 18-year-old actress will take over from fellow British star Keira Knightley, 23, when her contract ends this summer. A source said: "Emma has been excitedly telling friends that she is going to be replacing Keira." Emma landed the deal with the French fashion house after signing up with top modelling agency Storm in an attempt to branch out from acting.

Chanel has been preparing Emma for her new role by dressing her for film premieres and parties. A source said: "She has been slowly integrated into the Chanel brand. Once it became clear she is growing into a beautiful young woman and wears the Chanel brand so elegantly, they had to sign her up.

Chanel realises it is important to target a young audience." Bosses at Warner Bros - who make the "Harry Potter" films - have given the deal their blessing.

Rihanna arrives boots-first at BET’s ‘106 & Park’ at the BET Studios in New York City on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old soccer stud is expected to greet customers later today and debut the new image on a mural at Macy’s that overlooks a 6,000-seat amphitheatre in San Francisco.

The ads, shot on Malibu’s beach by fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, will appear in sport, fashion and lifestyle magazines and on billboards in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Milan, Rome, Paris and Tokyo. The print magazine ad will debut in the August edition of Vanity Fair.

Beckham is also up for Choice Male Athlete, going up against Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Tiger Woods.
