Kate Bosworth Lets Loose in London

Labels:

Kate Bosworth helps an over-enthusiastic photographer back up after he fell into a potted plant outside of her London hotel late Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old actress is in town to promote her new gambling flick, 21. The film opens in theaters across England this Friday, April 11. If it’s any indication, 21 was number one at the box office the last two weekends, so it shouldn’t have any problems pulling in overseas audiences this weekend.

A bronze fountain memorial to Dodi al-Fayed (R) and Princess Diana is seen in central London in this Aug. 31, 1998 file photo. Princess Diana and her lover Dodi al-Fayed were unlawfully killed by the grossly negligent driving of their chauffeur Paul and paparazzi photographers pursuing them into a Paris road tunnel 10 years ago, an inquest ruled on April 7, 2008.
A coroner's jury ruled that Princess Diana and her boyfriend were unlawfully killed as the result of the drinking driver and reckless pursuing photographers, media reported Tuesday.

"The verdict is unlawful killing, grossly negligent driving of the following vehicles and of the Mercedes" carrying the couple, the jury foreman announced.

MIT's Nexi robot displays facial emotions

Roboticists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a robot named Nexi that expresses emotions the same way humans do by the use of a highly mobile face.

Nexi's head and face were designed by Xitome Design with MIT. The expressive robotics started with a neck mechanism sporting 4 degrees of freedom (DoF) at the base, plus pan-tilt-yaw of the head itself. The mechanism has been constructed to time the movements so they mimic human speed.

Nexi's face has been designed to use gaze, eyebrows, eyelids and an articulate mandible to communicate a greater range of different emotions.

Nexi has a color CCD in each eye as well as an indoor Active 3D infrared camera in its head and four microphones to support sound localization.

The chassis for the robot is also advanced; it is based on the uBot5 mobile manipulator developed by the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics UMASS Amherst. The mobile base can balance dynamically on two wheels; Nexi has what amounts to a Segway-like body. The arms can pick up 10 pounds; the plastic covering of the chassis can detect human touch.

Now, Nexi needs to learn to react emotionally, like the Kansei robot created at Meiji University's School of Science and Technology. Nexi's range of emotional expression can also be compared with that of the South Korean EveR2-Muse Robot; she has a more human face. Also, the WD-2 Face Morphing robot uses a much more flexible facial structure.

Gwyneth Paltrow Will Work For Food (Bank)

Gwyneth Paltrow keeps things interesting in gladiator-esque heels at the 2008 Can-Do Awards Dinner at Pier 60 at NYC’s Chelsea Piers on Monday. The event marked the 25th Anniversary of the hunger-relief program, Food Bank For New York City.

Food Bank NYC unfortunately has seen a sharp drop in food donations over the past year: “We have less food in our warehouse. We’re practically seeing empty shelves every week in the warehouse, when we used to be brimming over and able to turn food around really quickly. What that means is that there’s less food in food pantries and soup kitchens around the city, and you literally have people standing in line for hours at a time waiting for food, only to be turned away because the food runs out.”

PAMPERING PRINCESS

Kate Walsh makes her regular visit to the Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts clinic on Melrose Place in Los Angeles on Monday.

The 40-year-old Private Practice star was seen picking up her car at the valet stand.

The Washington Post has some great posts of Kate talking about sex education when she was at Capitol Hill. Here’s how she address the topic of 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears being pregnant: “I don’t know about setting us back. But it’s clear that sex is still not a topic that it is comfortable for people to engage in in this country. Sadly, I think there’s still a huge lack of education — not just with educators, but also with parents and children. I think innately, it’s just an uncomfortable thing to talk about. Even the most progressive, educated parents have a hard time. There is this sort of biological, psychological emotional difficulty when it comes to really educating and talking frankly about sex with your kids. I think it’s probably just human nature. It’s hard to imagine your kids becoming sexually active and really accepting that and having frank conversations about it.”
